Addiction in Addison County

This article raises several important issues about addiction in Addison County, VT.  First, addiction rates are increasing with heroin and prescription drugs playing the largest role.  Addicts are younger, down to early teens.  Second, families report difficulty getting addiction care.  With few addiction service providers, addicts end up in the legal system instead of getting needed medical care.

Local police are concerned about crimes associated with drug addiction, however their numbers have recently been cut due to budget reductions.  Police are asking community members to attend meetings where they can discuss possible solutions.

  1. Those drug trends are concerning, but it is comforting that the community is aware of the situation and is taking action. Hopefully programs can be organized to make families and children aware of the drug problem. I also liked the idea of treating young people with addiction problems instead of sending them to prison. This would target the problem specifically and may even decrease costs to the legal system.
